Paul was born in Somerset, England and studied at Somerset College of Arts & Technology, Epsom School of Art and Plymouth University. He has worked freelance as an Illustrator for the best part of 30 years, and a visiting lecturer at several UK Art colleges and increasingly as a Fine Art painter.
Artists Statement
Fine Art Painting
I have an immense love of colour which is leading my practice ever closer to abstraction whilst still maintaining the graphic quality that I know and love.
I have several series of paintings, all of which are very detailed and completely made by hand, often on quite a large scale and without the use of any masking or tapes to aid the crispness of line, these therefore require an intense amount of focus. This process becomes extremely therapeutic although rather time consuming to complete.
These works offer the perfect balance for my creative life as a alternative to the often very quick turn around of my illustration work which is all started in an analogue manner with pencil and paper and completed digitally using a Mac and iPad.
Illustration
As a visual storyteller, my Illustration work is also intensely colourful, clean, bold and graphic. These works are often highly conceptual and use metaphors to convey often quite complex subjects for major clients worldwide in the fields of Advertising, Design, Branding, Publishing and Editorial.
My work has been recognised with over 50 major Awards from several major institutions including the NY Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, 3x3, Lürzer’s Archive, the Society of Illustrators of LA, the Association of Illustrators, the World Illustration Awards and GRAPHIS amongst others.
